Information

The existing structure of the community hall ceiling was to be retained in its entirety but relieved of some of its weight and bawdiness by the application of colour and shapes.

The existing structure was to be retained in its entirety but relieved of some of its weight and bawdiness by the application of colour and shapes. The selected colour scheme is supported by the notion of the Firmament. Flying birds move and enliven the panels in the ceiling with their rhythm. The use of complimentary colours for the birds and their respective backgrounds results in a coherent system of surfaces. The existing ornamentation in the panels is reproduced in the colour scheme, emphasised and pulled towards the sky like a net. The cords to the truss are freed of their weight by the employment of several colours, primarily red, and emphasised as a structure; the carved parts are highlighted to visible effect. The play of the different hues of colour and different forms frees the ceiling of its material quality. The dark tones draw the space out lengthways, the combination of orange and turquoise creates the illusion of sunshine with its brightness and radiance.
