Information

Following a hike in the surroundings of Amstetten, Leo Kandl documented cultivated fruit and plants growing wild that were familiar to the local residents. The subjects were hung in the central corridor of the building and in the refractory.

My considerations for implementing this project for a regional home for the elderly in Amstetten proceeded from the pictorial subject of the plant and its easy accessibility for the viewer, as well as from the significance and familiarity of the subject-matter for the inhabitants of this region. In terms of the design solution, what actually interested me was a presentation that covered a large area and dealt with space. In the course of one year I repeatedly undertook walks in the wider circumference of Amstetten and took photographs of fruit cultivation and of the proliferation of nature in the wild. The presentation of my first photographic experiments aroused interest among the inhabitants of the home. The picture panels are hung in the central corridor of the building and in the adjacent dining room. Those in the dining room have no text and show six views of fruit trees, those in the corridor area show three series of pictures each with a text panel: Himalaya-Springkraut/Roter Holunder, Himbeere/Flockenblume/Lampionpflanze/Wiesenglockenblume, Scharfer Hahnenfuss/Veilchen, Schlüsselblume/Sumpfdotterblume/Wegwarte/Heckenkirsche/Distel/Roter Holunder, Wilder Wein/Efeu/Schwarzer Holunder/Malve
(Himalayan jewelweed/red elderberry, raspberry/knapweed/campion/bluebells,
banewort/violet, cowslip/kingcup/chicory/hedge cherry/thistle/red elderberry, wild vine/ivy/black elderberry/hollyhock)
