Information
The sculpture entitled 'O 21' was completed between 1980 and 1990. Franz Xaver Ölzant selected a piece of diorite 550cm tall, and treated the surface in a way that does not immediately suggest that the artist has intervened. The viewer is more likely to see the work of nature in the pitting.
"It is the joy of communicating which stands at the beginning of every pictorially creative activity. Whether forms are filled with content, or intellectual aims seek the appropriate structures for treatment, is purely secondary. The above-mentioned joy is then joined by a curiosity in exploring as yet untried possibilities of expression. Some visions of design, which one would also have to designate as content, may be arbitrary things that have been seen (e.g. the light in a treetop); recognised and interpreted in new context with the corresponding attribution of significance."
