Information
When Boris Podrecca redesigned the train station square in Krems, Michelangelo Pistoletto created a light sculpture that was to replace a lamp on the west side of the square located between the pedestrian area and the street.
"L'ala die Krems" ("The Wing of Krems"), a high, wing-like construction, is the artist's first piece in Lower Austria. The work consists of individual plexiglass surfaces on both sides that are illuminated from within at night. These surfaces are covered with signs that were developed together with the people of Krems who provided models for the various fields. Only one sign, i.e., SEGNO ARTE, was was contributed by the artist himself. The SEGNO ARTE consists of two triangles juxtaposed to reflect each other. As a "sign of art" they are both an emblem and an expression of an artistic attitude based on "setting reflective points" so as "to bring together phenomena related and unrelated to art anywhere, shifting places and expanding rooms ..." (Michelangelo Pistoletto). It is also indicative of an expanded notion of art where very different forms of communication interface, taking into account the function and aesthetic of the train station square in Krems.
