Information

The sculptural installation for the roundabout consists of a circular mini-sports arena, domed towards the centre, with four tracks including start and finish lines and the orange plastic surfacing typical of sports grounds. Entitled Kreisverkehr (Roundabout) it can not only be read as a laconic literal interpretation of the spatial situation, but also fits into Lienbacher's oeuvre with its core themes of sport, physical achievement and discipline.

Four racetracks complete with start and finish lines have been laid out on the Volksbank-Platz roundabout in the orange plastic surfacing usually used for sports fields. The work is not only titled Roundabout, it is literally what it does when continually stretching circular lines are continued from the tracks in the middle of the roundabout in the lines of the road markings. With this, Ulrike Lienbacher provides the square with an integrative element while deliberately avoiding the usual separation of a dead space in the middle from the surrounding flow of traffic. A dome that undergoes a difference in height of 70cm from the highest point in the middle to road level is defined in the centre as a sculptural volume, one that provided a stage that was well received by the local athletics society for a public display at the opening. In addition, one could however also understand it as a platform for Lienbacher's own works. Her drawings, photographs and objects engage with generally applicable experiences related to sports, physical achievement or disciplining. Hula-hoops, athletes and youthful gymnasts find a surface for Lienbacher's projected constructions for the body in the oversized disc, which is itself just such a construction.
