Information

For the second time, in 2008 the school and kindergarten complex was extended according to designs by the artist duo K.U.SCH. In 1989 K.U.SCH. designed the forecourt to the building. In 1995 an extension was conceived by K.U.SCH. in dialogue with the existing substance by the architect Ernst Mrazek.

Building the Gerasdorf kindergarten in 1993 was an artist's dream come true for the group K.U.SCH., who completed a building as a sculpture. In 2008 they also had an opportunity to draw-up the concept for its extension. Entirely in-line with their artistic thinking, not only do they cross the medial boundaries of the classical artistic disciplines but they also interweave them with one another. The varied floor plan that had been developed in collaboration with the architect Ernst Mrazek, the focus of which is marked by a high projecting stem, was extended. Like a crawling armadillo, the sculptural volume winds around its own axis and signals the entrance area with a tent-shaped projecting structure. On the new wall surfaces, the layering of four textured plaster colours produces cloud shapes. The interplay between light and shadow, picture and frame as well as sculpture, architecture and painting is taken further with the integration of round and blind windows. With this work K.U.SCH. is adhering consistently to their chosen artistic method of combining multiple allusions and irritations from everyday life. As in the objects, sculptures, installations, images, performances and Land Art projects by K.U.SCH., the large-scale architecture-object functions as a signal here, as well, and speaks in its own words with its physicality, its referentiality and its presence. By "stirring up" the subconsious and by encouraging associations K.U.SCH. produce similarities and related significance capable not only of inspiring the children to new ideas but also their parents and other visitors to the kindergarten.
