Information
The Mistelbach regional vocational school for agricultural and mechanical engineering, bicycle mechatronics, farriery, etc. has been given a new dormitory. The subsequent, invited artistic competition resulted in the creation of a work in the outdoor space that both increases the quality of stay for the apprentices and can contribute to the identity of the training location.
The winning project by Anna Vasof is a sculptural object clad in sheet steel in the form of an oversized, open cantilever toolbox with a wooden platform inside. By enlarging an everyday and universally familiar object from the everyday life of a craftsman, the object not only establishes a reference to pop art and school in terms of content, but is itself practical as a generous seating area. By combining both aspects, the artwork cleverly and humorously addresses the future roles of the users.
At first glance, the toolbox in the new inner courtyard is a clear reference to the equipment to be found in the school building and thus symbolizes the teaching content. However, Vasof's concept contains more complex intentions: the young people who acquire knowledge here for their future careers should see themselves as a kind of tool capable of solving problems and overcoming challenges of various kinds through their proximity to the artistic object. Their own skills are the instruments that they use and hone in the course of their training. Learning thus becomes part of the adventure of growing up: taking responsibility, expanding the knowledge acquired and using it productively. In this way, the toolbox also becomes a visual enhancement of future activities and acquired skills.
Inside, the open toolbox offers wooden plank-covered seating areas that invite you to linger. The artist has brought together the various requirements in the toolbox in a humorous and coherent way and created a polyphonic signal object for the school that has an effect both internally and externally.
