Station St. Valentin

Back
Ended
St. Valentin, 1993 – 2017

Information

Norbert Maringer had a cross excavated from the roof of a former-bunker on the station grounds. The cross has been paved with granite and earth to allow an unaffected reflection on history.

Project no longer on site.

Situation: on one of the areas belonging to the station there is the former entrance to a bunker. It has been covered with concrete slabs and partly forms the border between a car park and the adjacent lawn area. The aim of the work: to excavate a cross directly from the bunker entrance into the lawn area. Through the excavation the underlying bunker becomes partially visible. Dimensions, shape and material of the cross: dimensions: eleven paces long and seven paces wide. Shape: slightly conical, in order to draw the gaze in the direction of the bunker and the station. Material: earth with loosely arranged granite slabs on top. The latter are quarry stones from the Mauthausen area. Direction of the cross: in an axis with the bunker, the station and the Nibelungen Factory. 1st Situation in the direction of the bunker: the top of the cross leads as an intended extension into the bunker entrance. 2nd Situation in the direction of the station: bombardment during the war 3rd Situation in the direction of the Nibelungen Factory: manufacture of tanks. Intention: people travelling past are automatically confronted with the bunker cross and able to freely come to terms with what happened in the past and with the present situation of peace.
