Erinnerungskultur

In 2025, several key historical events will converge in a commemorative year: the end of the Second World War in 1945 and thus the liberation from National Socialism, the signing of the State Treaty in 1955, Austria’s accession to the European Union in 1995, and the enlargement of the European Union in 2005. KERNOE is taking this opportunity to focus on all those art projects that have shaped the divers culture of remembrance in Lower Austria since the 1990s. Over 40 projects, including memorials, monuments, temporary installations, and much more, have been created to date in collaboration with municipalities and associations. The aim of these projects was and is to give space and visibility to the past through a wide variety of artistic approaches, to demonstrate the enduring commitment to responsibility, to establish links to the challenges of our present, and, ideally, to provide impetus for the future.
