Information

For the redesign of the streets in Grafenberg Michael Öllinger created seating for the main square out of three granite boulders of 3.6 and 8 tonnes each. Form-fitting cavities have been worked into the rock. The exterior is untreated. The seats have been polished smooth.

with the curse of redesigning the streets of Grafenberg there was also the idea of furnishing each square where there was a May tree every year. The result was the sitting stones, 2 granite eccentric blocks with 3,6 and 8 tons. Seats (indentations to sit on) have been carved into these stones the surface of which has been polished so that it reflects the light. The intention was to give life to a meeting point in the most natural and enduring way, to give the square a center but at the same time to leave enough free space for drinking benches at the village festivals. From today’s perspective the idea was a success. The stones were accepted by the children who climb around on them, the older residents of Grafenberg who still prefer the benches standing in front of the Sparkassenbank and the regional tourists who photograph each other while trying out the stones.
