Information

The metallic sculpture painted bright yellow consists of three cut-out like elements representing an abstract eye. The object was placed in a meadow following complaints from local residents that they felt watched.

A sculpture which, as far as its visual construction is concerned, pursues a classical idea. My works are intended to be fully 'functional', i.e. they have no undefined side which is concealed by the base. Three elements, as in a cut-out silhouette portrait, in which the parts are always part of the next larger part. In Context Vista these parts were cut from a square metal panel 10mm thick, folded, bent, and then screwed and welded together. New spatial relations were thereby created. Steel is worked by me as valuable raw material. That is also evident in the pragmatic approach. To achieve great efficiency, a quality of steel manufacture, great expansion and volume with a minimal use of material, is but one detail of Context Vista. The title is based on the work's stylised, eye-like appearance and also explains the relationship of the space in which the work stands, its position at the entrance to the market town of Ybbsitz and the sculpture’s role as an 'observer'. The sculpture lies at the side of the path like the skeleton of a Cyclops’ eye. Through the shining yellow paintwork (Ra 1 1007 without black), the form is reinforced, while the lines and surfaces become discernible and bring out the subtle flow of the lines. To observe and be seen and to monitor are functions of the eye. The sculpture Context Vista has acquired still more symbolic character from being called 'S' Aug' (the eye) by the locals, a state of affairs which cannot be influenced. Reflections from the local population seem to me to be important for art in the public space.
