A Garage For Bicycles For the City of Krems an der Donau
Back
Information
Krems is a popular destination for cycle tourists following the course of the Danube. The trio of architects won the invited entry competition in 2000 for a bicycle garage in the town. The concept for Bike Lid envisaged a covered parking area and an information stand, among other features. It was rejected by the local council and not realised.

The garage for bicycles and the Information Centre form orientation points as well as places of convergence for visitors to Krems. A large canopy stretches over the square, embracing different areas. Additional infrastructure on Südtiroler Platz draws the flow of movement in the pedestrian zone through Steiner Tor into the extended urban space, strengthening the traffic network and increasing the dynamics in the urban fabric. Subsequently, Südtiroler Platz is to be declared a 30 km/h speed limit zone. The speed restriction is to be supported by ground markings and the application of different road surfacing. The aim is to increase the presence of cyclists in the city, both cycle tourists coming from the Danube cycle path and local residents who are increasingly shifting from using cars to using bicycles. There are intersections with the road as well as in the pedestrian zone to which the Bike Lid has to react. Squares and street lines, that are equally accessible to the pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers alike while having emphasis on the mutual safety of all users contribute to the extended contemporary definition of the urban fabric and urban life. Unfortunately the project was not realised by the City of Krems. A second competition was launched instead.
